The Critical Role of Emergency Response and Rescue

Since 2015, SETS have proudly been involved with Wanneroo raceway, providing emergency response and rescue during events held at the track.

SETS takes charge of on-site fire safety and emergency rescue operations, ensuring a swift response in the event of a road crash. Leading the team as Chief is Kevin, who also dedicated his time early in April to train up over 30 volunteers for the SuperCars Event. These volunteers participated as marshalls over the course of the weekend.

Wanneroo Raceway History

Wanneroo raceway, previously known as ‘Wanneroo Park’, was established on 2nd March 1969 and has become the home of motorsports in Western Australia. The track appeals to  drivers from all ages and racing abilities.

The raceway features a diverse range of racing categories from motorcycles and Formula Fords to saloons, drifts, historic and touring cars. It also serves as a hub for driver education, police recruit training, State Championship events, Tuning Days, and the Australian Superbike Championship in Perth.

SETS recent involvement at the raceway

The SETS Emergency Response Team showcased their expertise during the Supercars Perth SuperSprint held at the track back in April. As the event’s Chief of Fire and Rescue, Kev skillfully led a dedicated team of approximately 30 volunteers, ensuring their preparedness to respond promptly to any situation.

The event ran over three days from the 28th-30th April. It was great to be amongst the adrenaline and Kev was fortunate enough to meet and chat to some racing car legends such as Craig Lowndes, Mark Skaife, Mark Crompton, Chaz Mostert and Shane Van Gizberg.

Kev and the team were also a part of the emergency response team for the Toyota Track Day in May, delivering vital fire emergency response and emergency rescue.

Benefits of having an emergency response and rescue team on site

The rapid response capabilities of SETS attending these events are invaluable, allowing us to promptly assess situations, implement evacuation protocols, and initiate firefighting measures to contain and minimise the impact of fires. Our specialised training enables us to provide immediate medical assistance, administer first aid, and efficiently evacuate individuals from potentially hazardous environments.

Additionally, SETS possess expert knowledge of fire prevention techniques and safety protocols, conducting thorough inspections to identify and address potential fire hazards. Kev and the team are equipped with specialised gear and tools, to effectively handle the unique challenges presented by supercars’ lightweight and flammable materials.

The team assists with crowd management during emergencies, ensuring orderly evacuations. Our presence not only mitigates risks and reduces liabilities but also instills confidence and peace of mind in attendees and participants, allowing everyone to fully enjoy the event while knowing that their safety is a top priority.
