History of SETS

Since 1998, SETS has grown and transformed into one of Australia’s leading safety training, personnel, equipment and vehicle providers.

Today, we pride ourselves on the quality and scale of services we provide to the mining sector, whilst remembering and staying true to our roots.

From humble beginnings to setting safety standards

When CEO Kevin Broadbent,  commenced his career as an Emergency Services Officer for Western Mining in the early 1990s, he knew he wanted to make a difference. Over the years, Kevin’s skills and experience grew as he not only worked in the role, but also dedicated a large amount of time to volunteering with both St Johns and Bushfire Rescue.

An integral part of the Leonora and Kalgoorlie communities, Kevin was often asked to help upskill other volunteers, share first aid skills and restock first aid kits.  Becoming a qualified trainer allowed Kevin to share his wealth of knowledge and experience.

After nearly a decade of servicing the Goldfields, making some great partnerships and learning along the way, Kevin and wife Cathy established Safety Emergency Training Services (SETS) in 1998.

Training was the main priority for SETS in the early days, but as projects commenced, Kevin saw the need for ambulances on site and started buying and fitting out ambulances to rent.

Evolving and expanding safely

Our evolution and expansion saw us create a custom-built training facility and head of operations in Balcatta. This too, saw our branding evolve, when we became SETS Enterprises in 2018. Naturally our team has grown, together with our emergency vehicle fleet, but our family business roots are still embedded with Kevin, Cathy, their son and daughter all still working full-time in the business.

Today, the cornerstones of our company continue to drive us to help thousands of Australians not only become qualified members of the workforce, but create safer, more responsive worksites across a range of industries, from petrochemical and marine, to mining, construction, oil + gas, private and public sectors.

A personal message from Kevin:

“We have come a long way from the six by four trailer we used to light up! Our new custom built fire simulator is impressive, fully gassed, plumbed and environmentally friendly now!

In the early days of the business, we thought a team of 30 was a big effort, and now today we have a team of closer to 280. A true testament to the relationships and experience we have gained over this time. Our experience is growing, our team is growing and our ability to customise on-site training is phenomenal.

As industry leaders, it is now up to us to resource the industry, train people to the fullest and share our knowledge, so the skills are there to take care of future generations in the mining industry”.
