Course Outline

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Course Outcomes:

On completion of this course, participants should be able to have a sound knowledge of:

  • Duty of care
  • Burns
  • Infection control
  • Crush injuries
  • Choking
  • Overexposure to heat and cold
  • Drowning
  • Eye, ear and nose injuries
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Head, neck and spinal injuries
  • Defibrillation
  • Bites and stings
  • Asthma
  • Fractures and soft tissue injuries
  • Documentation in the workplace
  • Substance misuse
  • Altered conscious state
  • Internal injuries
  • Bleeding and amputations
  • Poisoning

Students who attend and successfully meet all assessment requirements of the course will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment with the following unit of competency: HLTAID003 – Provide first aid.

There is a maximum number of 12 participants per program.

This course has theoretical and practical components that participants must successfully complete. To maintain a valid First Aid Certificate, this course must be completed every 3 years.

This course has a pre-reading requirement.
